Sleep Debt…..

Sleep Debt…..

Sleep Debt

Do you often find yourself dozing off while reading, watching a movie or working? You could be incurring sleep debt! In the US, an estimated 30+% of people are not getting enough sleep. If you think that is bad, Singapore may be worse off – with 3 out of 4 people not getting enough sleep. In fact, Singapore is the third most sleep-deprived of the 43 cities profiled in a 2014 report published by Jawbone (makers of digitized wristband that tracks sleep patterns). The Lee Kuan Yew Institute of Public Policy has classified the nation’s sleep deprivation as a public health crisis.

What exactly is sleep debt and how does it affect your health?

Sleep debt is the difference between how much sleep you need or how much you actually get on a daily basis. How much sleep a person needs generally depends on their age. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put together a comprehensive table with sleep recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society as below:

While there are many reasons resulting in people not getting enough sleep, consistently missing out on sleep can cause serious problems with your health. Apart from feeling tired throughout the day and inability to concentrate, not getting enough sleep can also weaken your immune system and make it more difficult for your brain to process and store new information‌.

More importantly sleep deficiency in the longer run is linked to many health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and depression – all chronic illnesses we want to avoid if we wish to live a healthy life.

So if you are trying to heal from a chronic health problem or mystery illness and have hit a wall in your healing despite doing all that you can from a nutritional standpoint, consider looking at the quantity and quality of your sleep. It could be just the dimension you have missed out to help move the needle in your healing.
